Jeanette King
Jeanette was one of the first students of Māori language at the University of Canterbury in the late 1970s, being taught by Bill Nepia and Margaret Orbell. After leaving university she trained as a secondary school teacher and taught Māori and Mathematics in the early 1980s at Avonside Girls High School which, at the time, incorporated Te Wai Pounamu Māori Girls College. She raised her children bilingually in Māori and they attended a local kohanga reo and Māori immersion primary schooling. Jeanette began teaching Māori language at Canterbury in the late 1980s and introduced immersion teaching into the Māori language programme in the early 1990s. She was instrumental in introducing and organising the very popular wananga reo (Māori language immersion field trips) for students. Her research interests centre on her background in Māori language and language revitalisation. Jeanette leads the Bilingualism theme at the New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour (NZILBB) http://www.nzilbb.canterbury.ac.nz/
