Ngā Kete a Rēhua: Inaugural Māori Research Symposium - Te Waipounamu

Welcome to the website for the Ngā Kete a Rēhua Inaugural Māori Research Symposium - Te Waipounamu.

Aotahi: School of Māori and Indigenous Studies, University of Canterbury, will host the symposium at the University of Canterbury campus in Christchurch on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th of September 2008.

Aims

  • Survey Māori subject research from established scholars, emerging researchers and postgraduate students across disciplines and tertiary institutions within Te Waipounamu (South Island).
  • Discuss research and engaging with Māori communities.
  • Identify strategies for building Māori research capacity.
  • Provide a forum for discussing new opportunities for Māori research.
  • Facilitate networking between scholars.
  • Canvass research by Ngāi Tahu descent scholars working in North Island and overseas institutions.

Multi-disciplinary

We invite papers from all researchers, disciplines and South Island institutions:

  • Kaupapa Māori, Māori and Indigenous Studies.
  • Te Reo Māori.
  • Education, Medicine, Health and Well-being.
  • Social Sciences, Humanities, Creative Arts.
  • Law, Politics, History, Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Science, Technology, Engineering.
  • Māori Development.

Papers

  • 30 minute research papers for established scholars and projects nearing completion.
  • 10 minute preface papers for new projects and postgraduate students.

Symbolism

Rēhua is the star Antares in the constellation of Scorpio and the leading chief of the stars. In Māori lore Scorpio is Te Matau a Mauī - the hook of Mauī.At sunset when the symposium begins, the planets Whiro (Mercury), Matawhero (Mars) and Kōpū (Venus), representing Ngā Kete o te Wānanga (the three baskets of knowledge) will set in conjunction beneath Rēhua and Te Matau a Mauī (representing the South Island institutions), hence the title Ngā Kete a Rēhua representing the South Island tertiary partnership in their pursuit of knowledge and excellence.
